A BEAT SURVIVES

A Beat survives
    pretends to be
  an ear as echo
 to this  underground shell
 he has located the turtles
found on Cape Cod beaches
     within reach
 of a sandcastle
 he's playing riffs
  of jazz
here on the sand
 stumbling on rocks
  waiting  to help
  the turtle   rescue
in a void of gestures
 from an absence of shadows
under a sun umbrella
near the edge of the shore
finding the  cold stunned turtles
 not all in  a coma
(as was the rumor)
held up by a beachcomber
returning with them underground
    in from the Florida Keys
during the winter
         the Beat hearing
in the same voice
    and shadowy sound
from an eerie ear
       the turtles are found
among the kelp and seaweed
  who have not drowned.
