BY AUTUMN OAKS

A student lamp burns late
in a freshman's dorm room
reading T.S. Eliot
by ancient oaks reigning
outside landscaped orchards
the scalloped rain
awaking sparrows on branches
the reader wishing to be back
at the garden gate hammocks
near faded clotheslines
yet preparing for the crew race
along the Charles this October.
