BELONGING

Where does a poet
belong in a world
turned grey
without rights
yet wrong
an earth-wise time
of cold injustice
as burdens of the day
over sold,

does he/she turn to nature
with a mature philosophy
in a nest of birdsong
or to religious piety,
if so what variety
when all have truth
in their society's time
yet scandalized arrests
from petty crime
which charms our youth
as it disarms in music
with grand words
from a mystic's chest.
