JAMES ENSOR'S "CHRIST"

Belgian Expressionist
James Ensor's
"Christ enters Brussels"
without an earthy humor
dizzying its colors
of its divine gore
at a Mardi Gras parade
parodying the fanfare of masks
and caricatures of humanity
marching in a racy airy city
by an allegorical brigade
from an expressionist
who knew how his probity
characteristically illuminates
and illustrates a single scene
leading to piracy and publicity
sounding out a culture of souls
amid the weighty underground
and may invade an artist's goal
in the wondrous yet lonely
and hidden way
of a contemporary painter
to exist.
