PLAYING BUXTEHUDE
(1637-1707)
B.Z. Niditch
wakes up on Sunday
to play Dieterich Buxtehude
in cantata and sonata form
on the organ
which stays with him
in his livelier hands
as he stares at snow falling
over the storm window
and lands on
the church stained glass
remembering the blue jay
of the last spring day
to pass us over
in his search from the sky
for a wilderness supply
while warmly taking
Judean bread and wine
feeling music of the Divine
not forsaking my own hymn
as the sun suddenly begins
to shine.
