SCHONGAUR'S "TEMPTATION"
With the weight
of "Saint Anthony's
Temptation"
of moving about
over an old vision
from an art book
at the public library
in my own adolescent
state of hard contemplation
searching by trying to be assured
from the purest images
at St. Leonard's church
in the North End of Boston
admitting for a bard
and art critic
this parish
was a bit garish
the sun coming through
over a stained glass window
holding onto my remains
of these rhymes of verse
wishing that these shadows
in my selfish soul
would bare fruit
in an apprehensive time
and remake me whole
then you took me by the hand
to the shrine that bares
your name
partaking the bread and wine.
