AUGUST MACKE'S EXPRESSION
(1887-1914)

Walking into the museum
and viewing August Macke's
was like a clever day dream
in a stupor of expressionism
that has never left me
an initial impression
yet sustains and animates
my belief that animates
in a colorful Fauvism
especially
"Tree in a Grain Field"
or the "Houses with Chimney"
and reading how you died
so young in the first war
solidified my pacifist idea
that no death is worth
any goal with a span
 in the desire
of manly congratulation
in any clear pride to enlist
one's body or soul
in a conflagration
over a fiery patch of earth,
but to resist all control
from invasions of privacy
but to devote oneself to art
to seal up our humanity
and play our part
whether in a play or poetry.
